Central Irrigation Development Division No. 6, Basundhara, Kathmandu

Background
Agriculture forms the mainstay of economy, generating over 40% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and employing the great majority of the work force. The six food grains (paddy, maize, wheat, barley, millet and pulses) dominate agricultural production, although cash crops are important in some localized areas. However, agricultural productivity remains low, barely keeping pace with population growth.

On going programs and project
Maintenance and sustainable management of irrigation system: Damage due to channel beaching, and slide, toe cutting, headworks damage due to seasonal flood etc. requires maintenance which is generally beyond the capacity and knowledge of farmers and CIDD 6 has been maintaining the irrigation system.

Medium Irrigation Project: The project develops new irrigation projects. A rain-fed land will be converted into irrigable land by constructing new irrigation project.

Community-Managed Irrigated Agriculture Sector Project (CMIASP) : The project aims to improve agriculture productivity and sustainability of existing FMIS suffering from low productivity and high incidence of poverty, thereby enhancing the livelihood of poor men and women in rural Nepal. To achieve the objective the project will.

  1. Provide improved means for WUA empowerment, irrigation facilities, agriculture extension, and targeted livelihood enhancement to build the human capital of the poor including women and traditionally neglected disadvantaged groups.
  2. Strengthen policies, plans, and institutions for more responsive service delivery and sustained impacts.

The project's infrastructure component primarily includes rehabilitation and improvements to existing FMIS.

Integrated Crop Water Management Project : The project develops the institutional strength of WUA and enhance livelihood of the farmers by teaching them the latest techniques on irrigation, agriculture, on farm water management and experimentally verify the output, through field demonstration, under different agricultural practices.

Non-conventional Irrigation Technology Project: Sprinkler, drip and irrigation pond technology are non-conventional methods of irrigation. As the cost of such project is very high, the method is suitable in growing high value crops and vegetables. The method is best option in rugged topography with small source of water. Farmers living in hills with majority being small landholder and poor will be benefited from this project.
